History of the Eurozone
Although provisional discussions began back in the 1960s, the euro didn’t come into existence until 1st January 1999.
The precedent for the currency was set in 1993, when the Maastricht Treaty came into effect, with the specific goal of creating an “economic and monetary union”. By 1999, all EU states except the UK and Denmark had entered the union, and the euro came into force.
However, the currency was only born virtually, and coins and notes only began to circulate in 2002. From here, the euro swiftly took over the former national currencies. In 2009, the Lisbon Treaty finalised the political authority of the euro and the European Central Bank.
