Debit Cards FAQ

Funding a deposit with debit card

  • There is no additional fee for using a debit card to deposit funds with CurrencyFair.
  • At the moment we only accept debit cards issued in Ireland.
  • CurrencyFair accepts debit card deposits in EUR only.
  • The card types we accept are Visa and MasterCard debit cards.
  • Credit Cards and Prepaid Debit Cards are not accepted at this time.
  • Your card must be enrolled in your card issuer’s 3D secure programme in order to use it with CurrencyFair. 3D Secure is the standard online security applied to the majority of card transactions made online and involves your bank approving the transaction by asking you to enter a password, code, or other information.
  • CurrencyFair will accept deposits of up to €2,500.

Irish issued debit card

For now, CurrencyFair is only able to process deposits from debit cards provided by the following issuers in Ireland:

  • Allied Irish Banks (AIB)
  • Bank of Ireland (BoI)
  • KBC Bank Ireland
  • Permanent TSB (PTSB)
  • Ulster Bank

Failed debit card payments

Should your debit card payment fail, an error message will be displayed explaining why the payment failed.

This may be related to a number of factors, for example; your bank may have blocked the payment, insufficient funds on the account, or your type of card not being supported (remember CurrencyFair only accepts Irish issued debit cards).

You can attempt to pay with your debit card again when a payment has been unsuccessful, however for your security you will need to re-enter your card details and complete the 3D Secure validation again.

Should your card payment continue to fail, please contact your bank. Remember you can always fund your deposit by Bank Transfer instead.

Debit Card data processing

All your data is encrypted, and debit card payments are processed via our secure debit card processor.

Our website uses 256-bit encryption via SSL from VeriSign. This indicates that your connection is secure.

3D Secure

CurrencyFair has implemented 3D secure processing on all debit card deposits, in order to provide additional security.

If you have not previously used 3D secure, you must first register your debit card and create a password. This can be completed via the 3D secure verification window. You can also sign-up for 3D secure directly with your bank.

Potential Fees

CurrencyFair does not charge you anything extra for choosing to deposit by debit card. However, depending on your card and issuing bank, payments via debit card can be interpreted as a ‘cash withdrawal’ and may carry small additional fees. Unfortunately we have no way to know this in advance, but your bank that issued the card should be able to provide more information.

How long does a refund to my debit card take to complete?

Please note that refunds can take up to 5 working days to show on your account.
