And if flex time isn’t possible, great benefits like remote work options, generous paid vacation and holiday time and opportunities for travel are part of the employment package.
Not only do these perks boost employees’ collective spirits, but Sarah Landrum at Women 2.0 says it benefits companies, too.
“Inflexible hours, especially combined with low wages, place demands on employees that leave them starved for time,” she says. This can lead to health issues, absenteeism and moral problems, none of which are good for long-term company success.
These 24 businesses with offices in the EU and other countries embrace work flexibility in all its forms. Their work/life business models have netted them awards for employee satisfaction.

Vacation and Travel Time
Accenture offers consulting and other services to clients in Spain, Russia, Portugal, the Netherlands, Italy, France and other parts of the EU. Employees are able to take advantage of “a number of programs that help our employees balance a successful career with a healthy lifestyle involving family, friends and community,” says the company. These programs include paid time off ranging from 12 to 27 days annually, family leave and nine paid holidays a year.
Specialising in mobile analytics, Urban Airship has locations in San Francisco, Portland and London. The workspaces are informal with benefits that include as many vacation days as needed. And if it’s just a breather you require, at Urban Airship you can grab a beer or play some ping-pong before getting back to making the groundbreaking possible.
VMWare produces endpoint security, enterprise mobility management, desktop virtualisation, data centers and other cloud products. The company, which has offices across Europe, describes itself as having a fun environment with generous and flexible time off programs and a focus on work/life balance. Employees laud that balance, mostly because they can adjust their schedules.
With nearly 5,000 locations spread across 90 countries, hotel chain Hilton Worldwide has hundreds of thousands of employees. They all get access to flexible paid time off and vacations and they can even bring their families with them if they have to travel for work.

A manufacturing and engineering company, MAVERICK Technologies has offices worldwide to serve its customer base spread across multiple industries. In 2016, the company made the 2016 list of 50 Best Workplaces for Flexibility on the Great Place to Work site. MAVERICK has “compressed workweeks,” limits overtime and lets employees work from home.

Specializing in financial market data, trading, debts and more, the Irish Stock Exchange is also involved in EU securities and market regulations. The company offers its employees “flexible working arrangements” that are ideal for expats.
Language companies like Berlitz, have flexibility built in: teach as many hours as you want. With bases in 70 countries and counting, Berlitz is an ideal fit for expats. Employees have said the company offers “great work/life balance. Excellent senior management, offering a lot of flexibility and encouragement to the employees.”
A travel company that networks with 100 countries and counting, BCD Travel employees may be on the road themselves or they may communicate with clients who are. Offering products and solutions for professionals looking to make investments eVestment specialises in sovereign wealth funds, endowments, private equity funds, hedge funds and more.
