St Patrick’s Day (or Paddy’s Day) is beloved by people around the world and it’s extra special in the world’s most isolated capital city: Perth, Australia.
In order to bring the magic of Paddy’s Day to the fine people of Perth, a special not-for-profit organisation has been established specifically to run the St Patrick’s Day Parade through the cafe district of Leederville. The organisation was founded by the ever-active Irish Families In Perth group.
About The Perth St Patrick’s Day Parade
There are two things to note about the Perth St Patrick’s Day Parade:
- It’s a lot of fun. The sun is inevitably shining and the streets are filled with music, smiles and laughter.
- It’s a free event and the committee could do with your help to raise money to put on the event (CurrencyFair are sponsoring the event too).
With the support and backing of the City of Vincent, sponsors, partners, and various fundraising initiatives, the committee coordinated a traditional style parade through the centre of Leederville. The parade featured marching bands, local sports clubs, school teams, cultural groups and community businesses. A community carnival in the Medibank Stadium followed with entertainment provided by Irish dancers, singers, musicians and sports as well as a number of stalls showcasing local groups, local crafts and traditional Irish goods.
There will be a specific crowd funding area at the festival so donors will see where their money went using #crowdfund – we think this an excellent initiative by this non-profit.
Now in its third year, the Festival will attract 20,000 people to the parade and family fun day on the stadium oval. As a not-for-profit organisation, the organising committee relies on the generosity of sponsors and fundraising activities to ensure they can continue to grow the event and also provide adequate facilities on the day.
It’s a free event and the committee want to keep it free but they need the help of the community to ensure they can put on the best event possible.
