Tim Porter, Head of Client Service

September 16, 2015

Welcome to the first in our “Meet The Team” blog series, where each month we’ll talk to a different member of the team about their experience working for CurrencyFair.

First up is Tim Porter, head of the Client Service team.

When did you start working for CurrencyFair?
I started with CurrencyFair in May 2010 (one month after the company was launched). When we started, there were only 6 of us in a small office. It seems like a long time ago now.

Tell us about your role
I am Head of the Client Service team. When the 6 of us started CurrencyFair, we knew that Client Service would be a key part of our business. We built the system, but we also needed people to trust us enough to actually use our product.
There are now 8 people in Dublin and 3 in Australia in the CS team and we are growing pretty quickly. Moreover, feedback seems pretty good, which is very positive.
I have a real passion for what we’re trying to do, I care about what we do, I believe in what we do and that comes across when you’re speaking to a client. We are not about hard selling. For me providing good client service is not difficult, you just have to care about what you’re doing and our team here is fantastic at doing that.

What is the most unusual thing that happened to you at work?
There is an amusing story that springs to mind. There was one client, she was from the UK and living in Spain. It was the first time she was using CurrencyFair and she was really stressed about it. She made a slight mistake before the money arrived and I helped her out. She had just got a new puppy at the time and was transferring money to actually buy goods for her new pet. She was so relieved when the exchange went so well that she named the puppy after me! So if you go to Spain and meet a puppy called Tim, that must be it!

What are your hobbies?
I have a young family at home that takes up a lot of my time! That includes a couple of black Labradors that we enjoy taking on long walks, usually ending up in a local country pub. I am really passionate about rugby and obviously excited about the World Cup starting soon.

One thing you’re the most proud of?
I’m very proud of what we’ve achieved here. When we started, we were 6 people in a small room, I sat on a box. Now we have 89 people and will be moving to a new office very soon! That is some achievement in 5 years.

Your favourite quote?
Treat people the way you want to be treated.

What’s the best thing about working for CF?
That’s an easy one: the people.
